SAP S/4HANA Cloud for JD Edwards customers: public or private edition
SAP’s cloud ERP comes in a standardised public edition and a customisable private one. Both mean adopting SAP’s processes as well as its software.

SAP describes S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition as a flexible, modular ERP with embedded AI across finance, supply chain, HR and sales, sold as a subscription1. For businesses that need more depth and customisation, it sells SAP Cloud ERP Private on an SAP-managed cloud2.
Best for: Large, multi-national JD Edwards customers that want SAP’s process standards, either in a standardised public cloud or a customisable private edition.
Not the right fit for: Mid-sized companies that want a short project, or teams that rely on heavy custom code they intend to keep.
What SAP S/4HANA Cloud does
In the public edition, SAP fully manages updates and handles technical operations including backup, disaster recovery, system maintenance and data protection. It comes with industry best-practice processes, a guided implementation and ready-to-use APIs1. The private edition is aimed at companies that need custom processes integrated across their landscape, on an SAP-managed cloud with built-in governance2.
For a JD Edwards customer, the choice between the two editions mirrors the choice about customisations. The public edition asks you to adopt SAP’s standard processes; the private edition lets you keep more of your own, at the cost of more to maintain.
Published evidence
No case studies with named customers are published.
SAP’s page names Pitney Bowes, Wefabricate (real-time insight into production costs) and Benjamin Moore (a two-tier ERP model) among its customers1. The stories describe results qualitatively, and none is presented as a JD Edwards migration.

Questions to ask SAP
- Public or private edition: which of our JD Edwards customisations would we lose in the public edition?

- Which former JD Edwards customers can we speak to?
- How long did their first phase take, and what did it include?
